But, one of the most difficult parts about starting a small business (and implementing that dream) is knowing where to start. You probably know about the industry you are entering, but all the other things like business licenses, taxes, labor laws, business plans, marketing plans and on and on, can be very overwhelming. It all has to be done and what should you do first?It is all that detail and red tape that makes most potential small business owners throw in the towel early – they just don’t know where to start. So, where do you start? You start by envisioning your dream and your success! You start by taking 15 minutes of quiet time and develop your dream. Some people may say that they don’t have an active imagination, but I say nonsense – it just needs a little practice.Find your quiet time and if you can, close your eyes. (Obviously, if your quiet time is while you are driving, keep those baby blues wide open). Now, first think about driving to your new business. If the business is home-based, think about walking into the area you are using for an office. Imagine the signage in front of your business, the inside of the building, the layout, the color of the walls, the people working there and of course, the products and services you will be offering. What kind of customers come into your business? Where do they live? Why do they use your products and services instead of someone else’s? The more detail you can put together, the better prepared you can be to sell your concept to friends, family, bankers and investors.Don’t worry about business plans and advisors until you can formulate your dream with some detail! Once you can “see” that dream with some specificity, you will be a good way through the opening process because you will have identified your products and services, defined your customers, and determined the size of your operation. You will also find that you have a fire in your belly that just won’t go away until the Grand Opening of your new business!
